Celtics highlighted by 2010-11 NBA schedule

If you're trying to get a lead on which NBA teams will be racking up wins and contending for the championship trophy this season, take a peek at the schedule. Talk radio, newspapers and sports websites will give you their opinion, but the schedule never lies.

That schedule reveals clues that the Boston Celtics are yet again expected to be a title contender for the fourth consecutive season. It's also a clear indicator that this roster will be a traveling circus that everyone -- even Laker fans -- will want to see.

After a 2009-10 season that was branded as "Reloaded" and saw the team reach the NBA Finals for the second time in three seasons, Boston went to work again this offseason and sculpted another behemoth of a team. With the likes of Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal jumping on the Celtics' train, in addition to some other well-crafted moves, the Celtics have deepened their roster and are poised to make another push for the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

Summer recap: One more run... again

One tick of a clock sounds exceedingly mundane, but that tick can mean so much to so many. The final tick at Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals can describe such a moment, as this wasn't just the end of a game -- it was a tick of epic proportions.

For the franchise that landed on the short end of the stick, it marked a morph from championship contention to self-preservation. That's what happens when a team built for one last run nosedives into an offseason where nine of its players -- including two of its "Big Three" -- were either days away from free agency or teetering on the brink of retirement; when the head coach mulls over staying on board for another season or walking away to spend more time with his family; and when the assistant coach who was the architect of the team's tenacious defense accepts the head coaching job with a conference foe.

That's exactly what happened to the Boston Celtics.

Ainge adds Shaq as Celtics stack to chase Banner 18

Some guys are large. And some guys are larger than life.

File Shaquille O'Neal, the Celtics' latest free agent signing, into the latter category.

O'Neal and the Celtics came to terms on a deal to bring the 15-time All-Star to Boston on Wednesday, and while O'Neal's role with the team in terms of basketball on the floor may not be that large, his presence in the city of Boston can't be overstated.

Patience, faith lead Robinson to "secure" state

BOSTON -- Nate Robinson has spent the majority of the the past two years living in the world of uncertainty, at least in a basketball sense. Times got tough -- tough enough to conquer most -- but Robinson didn't crumble, because he isn't like everyone else.

After all, how many three-time NBA Slam Dunk champions do you know of? Just one, and it's him. How often does a two-sport collegiate star turn to the NBA for a career and experience the success Robinson has since he left the Washington Huskies? Maybe once a decade? And how often do 5-foot-9 guards find a permanent niche in the world's top basketball league? Almost never.

Robinson has been able to do all of those things that few or none have before, and battling through the last two years of his basketball life with a positive mindset is just the latest of his rare accomplishments.

Rondo and pursuit of title lure O'Neal to Boston

BOSTON -- When you think of Rajon Rondo, you usually think of assists -- the tangible kind, as in the Celtics' franchise record 794 of them that he dished out during the 2009-10 regular season. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Waltham, MA, he had racked up another assist for the Celtics franchise that may be a key ingredient to the team making another championship run next season.

Jermaine O'Neal, one of the most coveted big men on the free agent market this offseason behind the big names like Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer and Amar'e Stoudemire, officially became a Celtic today, and he surpsingly noted that a chat with the point guard is what sealed the deal for his arrival in Boston.

"Rondo actually was the guy who probably sold it the most," O'Neal said in his first appearance as a Celtic. "... He really helped me understand where my fit would be."

Celtics introduce Bradley, Harangody in Waltham

BOSTON -- It's not often that you can enjoy a red-eye flight. After all, they're named such for a reason.

But the Thursday night -- err, Friday morning -- jaunts through the sky that Avery Bradley and Luke Harangody took this week were different. They may have been taking place while we were all sleeping, but these two wanted to anything but.

Bradley and Harangody were selected by the Boston Celtics with the 19th and 52nd picks, respectively, of the 2010 NBA Draft Thursday night and flew out in the early a.m. to be introduced in Waltham, MA, Friday afternoon. As these two players flashed their freshly embroidered No. 0 (Bradley) and No. 55 (Harangody) jerseys, their smiles would have never left you guessing that they didn't sleep a lick last night.

Celtics add Bradley, Harangody via Draft

If you wanted the Celtics to add some athleticism and toughness through the 2010 NBA Draft, Danny Ainge and Co. answered your wishes.

Boston chose a super athlete with its 19th overall pick in the draft in the form of Avery Bradley, a combo guard out of the University of Texas.

Bradley entered the NBA Draft after just one year at Texas, where he racked up 11.6 PPG, 2.9 RPG and 2.1 APG en route to numerous Big 12 All-league selections. The explosive guard stands at 6-foot-2, but he measured in with a wingspan better than 6-foot-7 at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.

Though Bradley finished as Texas' second-leading scorer this past season, that wingspan and athleticism has the Celtics far more enamored with his ability to contribute immediately on the defensive end.

But Bradley wasn't the only former collegiate player to be crowned the newest Celtic, as the C's also owned the rights to the 52nd pick in the Draft. As Ainge often does, he found a proven college star who slipped on other teams' boards. This year, that player is Luke Harangody, a 6-foot-8 forward out of Notre Dame.

As he has in the past with forwards such as Glen Davis and Leon Powe, Ainge chose a big man who plays with passion but also has a proven track record. Harangody is a former Big East Player of the Year who averaged 21.8 PPG and 9.1 RPG during his senior year with the Irish.
